From Donegal to the Lot – A Dog’s Tale

Harvey’s pawprints trace a tale of welcome, journeying from the hills of Donegal to the Lot Valley, and deeper still into the Célé Valley — Paradise Valley — where our villas offer riverside calm and countryside escapes.

The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new, yet in that timeless glow the Lot revealed its quiet beauty again and again — cliffs rising above the Célé, lavender drifting on the breeze, and stone terraces warmed by the day. I’m Harvey, and this is my story, written in pawprints along the river where every walk feels like discovery and every guest is welcomed as family.

I came from Donegal, where hills, lakes, and beaches were my playground — slopes to climb, waters to splash in, and stretches of sand to race across, each carrying the scent of rain and turf. Leaving that rugged coast behind, I found a gentler rhythm in France: rivers that invite me to swim, stone paths that warm beneath the sun, and villages that wake slowly with the smell of fresh bread. What changed was the landscape, but what stayed the same was the welcome — a place where paws, people, and stories all belong — and every stride feels like a wee adventure.

Here, the Célé sets the pace. I wander its banks while guests enjoy mornings on the terrace, coffee in hand, watching the river drift past. Stone paths and gardens invite exploration, and every stay becomes a dog friendly holiday in France — a place where families, pets, and countryside charm all feel at home.

The Lot is full of dog friendly adventures — rivers to swim, trails to roam, and villages that welcome paws as warmly as people. For families seeking pet friendly villas in France, it’s a countryside escape where every walk feels like discovery.

My journey from Donegal to the Lot is written in pawprints, but the welcome belongs to every guest. Here, dogs, families, and friends all find a home — and each stay becomes part of the story.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve a wee nap to take by the river…

  • Where Nature Holds the Space

From the cliffs of the Causse de Quercy to the quiet charm of Saint‑Sulpice, the Lot Valley offers a soulful escape for you and your dog. With pet friendly villas, riverside walks, and peaceful countryside, it’s a place to pause, explore, and feel at home — together.

Milly’s Holiday in the Lot

A week of friendship, flavour, and four‑legged joy

“Our group of friends stayed at Le Moulin sur Célé with our dog Milly, and every detail was exceptional. Private chef Claude‑Emmanuel Robin prepared exquisite meals, with his wife Evgenia serving with warmth and care. We enjoyed riverside walks, gardens, and a wine tasting at Château de Haute‑Serre. Truly a dog friendly holiday in France where pets are welcomed as part of the family.”

Whether it’s riverside walks, gardens to explore, or quiet corners to rest, we’re here — offering warmth, guidance, and the kind of thoughtful support that lets your holiday unfold naturally.”

Bringing Your Dog on Holiday — Frequently Asked Questions

From travel tips to house rules, here’s how we make sure your four‑legged friend feels at home in France.

We know that holidays are better when the whole family comes along — dogs included. This FAQ is designed to make your journey simple, from travel paperwork and stopover tips to what you can expect when you arrive at our villas in the Lot Valley. Think of it as a guide to help your four‑legged friend feel just as welcome as you do.

Travelling to France with Your Dog

Everything you need to know before you set off

Dogs from the UK, Ireland, and other countries are welcome at our villas. The rules depend on where you’re travelling from:

  • From the UK: Your dog must be microchipped, have a valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travel), and travel with an Animal Health Certificate issued by a vet within 10 days of departure. Tapeworm treatment is also required before travel and again before re‑entering the UK.
  • From Ireland or other EU countries: A microchip, rabies vaccination, and an EU Pet Passport are sufficient.
  • From outside the EU (e.g. USA, Canada): A microchip, rabies vaccination, and an official veterinary certificate are required. In some cases, a rabies antibody blood test may also be needed.

Tip: We recommend consulting your vet a few weeks before travel to ensure vaccinations and paperwork are in order. This gives time for the rabies vaccination (21 days before travel) and the Animal Health Certificate (issued within 10 days of departure).

Yes. We recommend consulting your vet early, bringing familiar bedding and bowls, planning comfort breaks, and checking transport rules with your ferry or airline. Use a harness or crate in the car, avoid hot cabins, and pack doggy bags for countryside walks. France is very dog‑friendly, but some parks and public transport have restrictions. We’re happy to guide you with local tips so your journey is smooth and stress‑free.

We often recommend breaking the journey with an overnight stay in Amboise, a charming town in the Loire Valley. It’s halfway between Cherbourg and the Lot, making it a perfect stopover. Le Clos d’Amboise, a 17th‑century mansion house with gardens, is dog friendly and one of our favourites. You’ll find riverside walks, historic châteaux, and plenty of dog‑friendly spots to explore. Read more about our own journey in Who’s Taking the Horse to France.

No. We don’t charge extra for dogs — they’re part of the holiday. We simply ask that you let us know in advance so we can prepare for their arrival.

Staying at Our Villas with Your Dog

What to expect once you arrive in the Lot Valley

Yes. All three of our villas — Le Moulin, La Carral, and Le Malbec — welcome dogs as part of the family.

We provide water bowls, shaded garden areas, and easy access to riverside paths. Our villas are designed with outdoor space where dogs can roam safely, while you relax.

Yes, many guests enjoy letting their dogs paddle or swim in the Célé river. River access is communal between the villas, so it’s a shared space for both guests and their pets.

No. For safety and hygiene reasons, dogs are not allowed in the swimming pools. But don’t worry — the Célé river is right on your doorstep, and many of our four‑legged guests love paddling or swimming there. With riverside walks and shaded gardens, there’s plenty of space for them to cool off and enjoy the outdoors.

Absolutely. The Lot Valley is full of dog‑friendly trails, from gentle riverside strolls to longer countryside hikes. Medieval villages and vineyards nearby also make for great outings with your dog.

Yes. Many local restaurants and cafés welcome dogs, especially in outdoor seating areas. We’re happy to recommend dog‑friendly spots nearby.

We can help arrange trusted local pet‑sitters if you’d like to enjoy a wine tasting or dinner without worrying. Guests have also enjoyed evenings with private chef Claude‑Emmanuel Robin and Evgenia serving, while their dogs rested happily at the villa.

We ask that dogs are kept off beds and sofas, and that gardens are respected. We also kindly remind guests to bring doggy bags for walks, so the riverside paths and gardens stay clean for everyone. Beyond that, we simply want them to feel welcome and safe.

Our family of ten recently spent a wonderful week at Le Moulin Sur Célé, and it exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, Deirdre and Marc made us feel genuinely welcome. Their hospitality was exceptional—warm, thoughtful, and always available when needed while still allowing us complete privacy to enjoy our vacation. The property itself is stunning. Nestled along the beautiful Célé River, Le Moulin offers the perfect blend of comfort, character, and tranquility. The accommodations were spacious, impeccably maintained, and ideal for bringing our family together. We enjoyed relaxing by the river and simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings. Le Moulin also offers an outstanding range of amenities that made our stay even more enjoyable. Our family took full advantage of the beautiful heated swimming pool, tennis court, croquet lawn, ping pong table, and the fleet of bicycles available for guests. With activities suitable for all ages, there was always something for everyone to enjoy. The location is perfect for exploring the Lot region. We visited Rocamadour, Saint Cirq Lapopie, Pech Merle Cave, Figeac, local markets, and several picturesque villages, all within easy driving distance. The area is rich in history, natural beauty, and authentic French charm. One of the highlights of our stay was the generosity of our hosts in inviting our family to a wine tasting and charcuterie gathering in the middle of their vineyard. It was a truly special experience that allowed us to appreciate both the beauty of the region and the passion behind their winemaking. We also thoroughly enjoyed the tour of their wine-making facilities, which provided fascinating insight into the process and added a memorable personal touch to our visit. What made our stay truly memorable, however, was the personal touch of our hosts. Their local recommendations helped us discover experiences we might otherwise have missed, and they went above and beyond to ensure our family had an unforgettable holiday. Le Moulin sur Célé is much more than a place to stay—it is a place where lasting family memories are made. We left with wonderful memories, new friendships, and a strong desire to return one day. Thank you, Deirdre, Marc, and James for sharing your beautiful corner of France with us. We wholeheartedly recommend Le Moulin sur Célé to anyone seeking an authentic, relaxing, and memorable experience in the Lot region. Your Canadian Friends, Roger & Sue

The Moulin sur Célé is an exceptional, luxurious and magical retreat which has surpassed our family’s expectations in every way. The architecture and the surroundings are incredible. Every room is beautifully decorated. Our host Deirdre and Mark, welcomed us in a way that made us feel at home the minute we walked in this wonderful “villa”. They went above and beyond with special arrangements as well as suggestions for excursions, restaurants and activities which allowed us or better plan our outings and enjoyed our “down time” by playing croquet, table tennis and swimming in the private heated pool. This family trip allowed us to have a good time and create wonderful memories. Thank you Deirdre, Mark and James for your attention to details and warm hospitality. It!s a trip that will forever be remembered and hope to return in the near future. Michel and Lynne

Excellent Stay! We had a wonderful stay at this vacation rental. The property was clean, comfortable and exactly as described. The location in a country setting with a river next to the property was perfect, with easy access to local medieval towns and local attractions. The hosts, Deirdre and Marc were extremely friendly, responsive and made sure everything was ready for our arrival. The home was well equipped with everything we needed and we especially appreciated the attention to detail and welcoming atmosphere. We felt right at home and enjoyed every moment of our stay. À real VIP treatment. Thank you for your generous hospitality.

Encore merci❤️

Le Moulin sur Célé is a magical paradise where the wonderful, welcoming hosts, Deidre and Marc, have thought of everything. The setting and property are stunning and it knocks your socks off when you first arrive. Everything is spotless, good quality and well organised. There are plenty of towels, tea towels and loo roll and WiFi is excellent throughout the property including outside. The grounds are beautiful, varied and immaculately maintained with several hidden, quiet corners to sit if you fancy a bit of “me time”. The hammocks by the river were our favourite spot. There’s lots to do on site including a selection of great bikes (with helmets), table tennis, tennis, croquet, archery and a great BBQ. There are beautiful quiet walks from the door. You don’t really have to venture out. If you do, the surrounding countryside is breathtaking with lively small towns (we particularly liked Cajarc) and a great boulangerie a few minutes away by car. Deirdre and Marc are available and discreet if you need anything. We had the local Michelin star chef cook and serve for us and a welcome evening meal prepared by a local lady. Both were copious, excellent and well worth it. We honestly haven’t got anything but praise for Le Moulin and the hosts and we’ve booked to go back next year which says it all! Thank-you Deirdre and Marc for an unforgettable holiday.

We had a fabulous return trip to the Moulin, quite transformed since our last visit 32 years ago. What a wonderfully comfortable and luxurious home from home it has become! We couldn’t have enjoyed our stay more - loving all the facilities, and of course the magical position by the river. Thank you so much for making our holiday such a very special one - we can’t wait to come back!
