Discover the French village restoration story behind Le Moulin sur Célé, La Carral and Le Malbec.

Follow our story from Series 5, beginning with Episode 6 and continuing into future episodes as our restoration journey unfolds.
After a lifetime in hospitality, we found ourselves dreaming of a new adventure. Having spent more than three decades welcoming guests to Harvey’s Point in Donegal, we weren’t looking to retire. Instead, we felt drawn towards a new challenge, one that would allow us to combine our love of hospitality with our passion for historic buildings and beautiful places. That search eventually led us to the Lot Valley in Southwest France.
What began as a single restoration project soon grew into something much bigger. We fell in love with the village, the landscape, and the slower rhythm of life here. Along the way, we restored Le Moulin sur Célé, created the romantic retreat of Le Malbec, and brought new life to La Carral. Our journey, and the challenges and rewards that came with it, were later featured on Channel 4’s Help! We Bought a Village.
While television captures a moment in time, the real story continues every day. Today, we welcome guests from around the world to experience this special corner of France for themselves.
❤️ With grateful thanks to Liza and the entire team at True North Productions for sharing our story.

The programme introduced viewers to our story, but the best way to understand why we fell in love with this valley is to visit for yourself. Swim in the River Célé, explore medieval villages, dine beneath the stars and wake to the sounds of the countryside. The places you saw on screen are real, and they are waiting to be discovered.
The faces you saw on screen, ready to welcome you in person
“Television captured part of our journey, but hospitality has always been at the heart of what we do. After a lifetime of welcoming guests at Harvey’s Point, we set out to create places where people could slow down, reconnect and experience the beauty of Southwest France.
Today, we’re delighted to welcome guests to Le Moulin, La Carral and Le Malbec, sharing not just beautiful places to stay, but the local knowledge, warmth and personal touches that make a holiday truly memorable.”

Our family of ten recently spent a wonderful week at Le Moulin Sur Célé, and it exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, Deirdre and Marc made us feel genuinely welcome. Their hospitality was exceptional—warm, thoughtful, and always available when needed while still allowing us complete privacy to enjoy our vacation. The property itself is stunning. Nestled along the beautiful Célé River, Le Moulin offers the perfect blend of comfort, character, and tranquility. The accommodations were spacious, impeccably maintained, and ideal for bringing our family together. We enjoyed relaxing by the river and simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings. Le Moulin also offers an outstanding range of amenities that made our stay even more enjoyable. Our family took full advantage of the beautiful heated swimming pool, tennis court, croquet lawn, ping pong table, and the fleet of bicycles available for guests. With activities suitable for all ages, there was always something for everyone to enjoy. The location is perfect for exploring the Lot region. We visited Rocamadour, Saint Cirq Lapopie, Pech Merle Cave, Figeac, local markets, and several picturesque villages, all within easy driving distance. The area is rich in history, natural beauty, and authentic French charm. One of the highlights of our stay was the generosity of our hosts in inviting our family to a wine tasting and charcuterie gathering in the middle of their vineyard. It was a truly special experience that allowed us to appreciate both the beauty of the region and the passion behind their winemaking. We also thoroughly enjoyed the tour of their wine-making facilities, which provided fascinating insight into the process and added a memorable personal touch to our visit. What made our stay truly memorable, however, was the personal touch of our hosts. Their local recommendations helped us discover experiences we might otherwise have missed, and they went above and beyond to ensure our family had an unforgettable holiday. Le Moulin sur Célé is much more than a place to stay—it is a place where lasting family memories are made. We left with wonderful memories, new friendships, and a strong desire to return one day. Thank you, Deirdre, Marc, and James for sharing your beautiful corner of France with us. We wholeheartedly recommend Le Moulin sur Célé to anyone seeking an authentic, relaxing, and memorable experience in the Lot region. Your Canadian Friends, Roger & SuePosted on Google![]()

The Moulin sur Célé is an exceptional, luxurious and magical retreat which has surpassed our family’s expectations in every way. The architecture and the surroundings are incredible. Every room is beautifully decorated. Our host Deirdre and Mark, welcomed us in a way that made us feel at home the minute we walked in this wonderful “villa”. They went above and beyond with special arrangements as well as suggestions for excursions, restaurants and activities which allowed us or better plan our outings and enjoyed our “down time” by playing croquet, table tennis and swimming in the private heated pool. This family trip allowed us to have a good time and create wonderful memories. Thank you Deirdre, Mark and James for your attention to details and warm hospitality. It!s a trip that will forever be remembered and hope to return in the near future. Michel and LynnePosted on Google![]()

The location in a country setting with a river next to the property was perfect, with easy access to local medieval towns and local attractions. Encore merci❤️Posted on Google![]()

Le Moulin sur Célé is a magical paradise where the wonderful, welcoming hosts, Deidre and Marc, have thought of everything. The setting and property are stunning and it knocks your socks off when you first arrive. Everything is spotless, good quality and well organised. There are plenty of towels, tea towels and loo roll and WiFi is excellent throughout the property including outside. The grounds are beautiful, varied and immaculately maintained with several hidden, quiet corners to sit if you fancy a bit of “me time”. The hammocks by the river were our favourite spot. There’s lots to do on site including a selection of great bikes (with helmets), table tennis, tennis, croquet, archery and a great BBQ. There are beautiful quiet walks from the door. You don’t really have to venture out. If you do, the surrounding countryside is breathtaking with lively small towns (we particularly liked Cajarc) and a great boulangerie a few minutes away by car. Deirdre and Marc are available and discreet if you need anything. We had the local Michelin star chef cook and serve for us and a welcome evening meal prepared by a local lady. Both were copious, excellent and well worth it. We honestly haven’t got anything but praise for Le Moulin and the hosts and we’ve booked to go back next year which says it all! Thank-you Deirdre and Marc for an unforgettable holiday.Posted on Google![]()

We are still talking about Le Moulin several weeks on. There are different areas and thoughtful details - including dreamy bedding - to enjoy, and the river running through the grounds gives the whole place a romantic spirit. It feels just perfect!Posted on Google![]()

We had a fabulous return trip to the Moulin, quite transformed since our last visit 32 years ago. What a wonderfully comfortable and luxurious home from home it has become! We couldn’t have enjoyed our stay more - loving all the facilities, and of course the magical position by the river. Thank you so much for making our holiday such a very special one - we can’t wait to come back!Posted on Google![]()

A truely wonderful place. The house is beautiful and had everything you could need. An enchanting place that allowed for a blissful holiday with wonderful hosts who could not have been kinder or more helpful.
