Walk the Donegal Camino with Peggy, Noel & Deirdre
The call of the camino started as a gentle whisper many years ago. It was always on the ‘bucket list’ but there never seemed to be time to make it happen. The whisper became louder when I watched the famous film ‘The Way’ featuring Martin Sheen. Finally, hubby Marc and I made a booking to walk the Via Francigena last April. However, our plans had to be postponed when Covid travel restrictions were imposed. We hope to fulfil our dream sometime in the not too distant future, especially as we now realise that part of the Via Podiensis walking route (GR651) is located just beside our new home from home and budding business, Le Moulin sur Célé in France.
In the meantime, I am so excited to be teaming up with my good friends, Peggy Stringer and Noel Cunningham to present Donegal Camino 2021; an 8-day walk from Malin Head to Slieve League – Saturday 4th September to Saturday 11th September inclusive. Following the success of Peggy’s inaugural Donegal Camino last year, it is our hope that this will become an annual event for all to enjoy.
We really want to promote our beloved Donegal, to raise funds for Cancer Care West and to make memorable moments together.
You are welcome to join part or all of the walks each day. The pace will be ‘leisurely’ at around 5km per hour and each day is about 15km on average. We are delighted to have secured the services of professional walking tour guide, John McGroary of www.walkingireland.ie. This walk is open to everyone but for safety and logistical reasons, numbers will be limited, so we highly recommend that you reserve your place as soon as possible.
Please use the online registration from below.
All walkers are responsible for making their own transport arrangements. We advise ‘car-pooling’ and parking a car at the beginning and end of each day route or having a family member or friend do a drop-off and pick-up.
Walkers are responsible for booking and confirming their own accommodation. It is advised to make reservations as soon as possible. An additional listing of quality accommodation options is available on www.govisitdonegal.com

I have always had a big love of hiking, of escaping to the great outdoors to reconnect with nature and find that inner peace that we all need from time to time. I love the simplicity of lacing up a pair of hiking boots and heading off to the hills. The crisp fresh air, the sounds, the scent of bog and heather, the taste of the carefully prepared packed lunch – it’s all part of the experience.
The Donegal Camino 2021 is a chance for us to come back into harmony and alignment with ourselves – with our minds, with our emotions and our spirit. For many, it might just be the light at the end of the dark tunnel of the pandemic. So let’s walk together.
At the end of the film ‘The Way’, Martin Sheen said:
“It’s important to remember that we are all on the same journey. You can’t have anyone walk this walk for you – but you don’t have to walk it alone.”
Peggy, Noel and I hope to walk with you soon.
