The Call of the Camino

BY DEIRDRE MCGLONE

The call of the camino started as a gentle whisper many years ago. It was always on the ‘bucket list’ but there never seemed to be time to make it happen. The whisper became louder when I watched the famous film ‘The Way’ featuring Martin Sheen. Finally, hubby Marc and I got the opportunity to walk the Camino de Francigena in 2022. Walking through the vineyards of Chianti, exploring the Tuscan countryside of verdant valleys and tree-lined roads, we enjoyed an unforgettable holiday experience. The inspiration for our spiral vineyard at Le Moulin came from a visit to a winery in Chianti as did our dream to host our very own Camino here in the beautiful Lot region – a hiker’s paradise.

Love the Lot - Our Journey

The Pilgrim route of the Camino de Compostela

When we fell in love with Le Moulin, little did we realise that it is located on the path along the pilgrim route of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. With such a world renowned route on our doorstep, we decided that, once we had our budding holiday rental business established, we would design a hiking holiday. It would be our pleasure to share our love of the Lot region and it’s fine food and wine with like-minded people who would like to join us on our journey.

Happy Hiking

I have always had a big love of hiking, of escaping to the great outdoors to reconnect with nature and find that inner peace that we all need from time to time. I love the simplicity of lacing up a pair of hiking boots and heading off to the hills. The crisp fresh air, the sounds, the scents, the taste of the carefully prepared packed lunch, meeting new people, exploring new places – it’s all part of the experience.

Donegal Camino

In recent years, I had the pleasure of developing and hosting the Donegal Camino in Ireland with my friends, Peggy Stringer, Noreen D’Arcy and Noel Cunningham. It is an annual week-long event that is centred on the true ethos of a Camino, a pilgrimage which brings together a network of amazing hiking routes and wonderful people. It showcases the stunning beauty of Donegal along with its famous hospitality, fine food and excellent accommodation. Our objectives are to promote Donegal and to raise awareness and funds for Cancer Care West charity. Over the past five years, we have raised over a quarter of a million Euro for this very worthy cause.

Hiking Holiday at Le Moulin

We have designed this hiking holiday for those who love to explore new places on foot and who enjoy fine food and wine in good company. It is ideal for exclusive rental by a group of up to 10 guests based on three double rooms and two twin rooms, each with private bathroom. Marc and I have done all the research in terms of route planning, dining options and other important elements such as having fun along the way! We have sourced an excellent professional guide called Audrey, a French native and fluent English speaker.

Further Details

The inaugural Le Moulin Camino will be take place from Friday 3rd October to Friday 10th October. It’s a lovely time of the year to hike in France as the weather is generally good, there are less crowds and yet all the local attractions, restaurants and markets are still open. It is our pleasure to design and host this 7-day event, which includes a moderate level of hiking blended with an array of food and wine experiences that are specialities of the south west of France. The weather is normally mild and dry in October with beautiful autumnal colours throughout the countryside. And while we can’t guarantee blue skies and sunshine, we can promise lots of fun and the chance to discover one of the most beautiful places in France. It’s an opportunity to recharge and reconnect in good company.
