Filmed in 2006, ‘A Good Year’ is a romantic comedy-drama based in France and it’s one of my favourite movies. Having watched it umpteen times, somewhere in our subconscious minds, the seed was sown to pursue Marc’s dream to ‘live where the vines grow’. It’s twelve months since we moved full-time to France and I can honestly say that it has been a very good year! There has been romance, lots of comedy and a sprinkling of drama from time to time.
Welcoming Guests
We’ve just completed Season 2 at Le Moulin and it has been a pleasure to welcome guests to our little piece of paradise in the Lot valley. The joy of hearing that first splash in the pool, the shriek of laughter from kids playing in the garden, the pop of the tennis ball, the ‘wow’ moment when showing the house itself and of course seeing the happy smiles of guests throughout their stay at Le Moulin. We’re loving our return to the wonderful world of hospitality and we’re always working on new ideas to delight our discerning guests.
Family Fun
In the past year, our three children have flown the nest but for a few magical weeks during the summer, we were all back together as a family at Le Moulin, working as a team and having fun. Everyone has found their ‘things’ that they excel in. Marc with his vision, his ability to fix anything and his endless patience. Budding architect Carl is in his element designing buildings for future phases of the renovation project and his lawn mowing skill is precision personified.
James is spending his college placement working with us on and in the business. A brilliant all-rounder, he’s happy in his wellies, power hosing the terrace or dressed in a crisp white shirt chatting to guests. He’s also looking after the marketing and financial side of the business. Christina has a talent for telling a story through photographs and video. She has also introduced some nice touches to the bedrooms with elaborate toilet roll folding and decorative pieces adjoining the fluffy towels. Me? Well I love looking after the laundry, cleaning windows and doing the dishes! I also love hosting our weekly ‘Meet & Greet’ Apéro with our guests. Harvey, our 4-year old golden retriever does what it says on the tin. He barks at the chance to retrieve the biggest stones from the river and deposit them in tidy bundles all over the Carl’s meticulously manicured lawn. As a family, there’s nothing nicer than gathering for dinner and drinks after a long day, sharing jokes, chats and even having the odd debate!
Community
The locals have warmly welcomed us into the community. We’ve helped out at the annual Fête and community clean-ups in our nearby village. It’s always fun to go to various events and meet our neighbours. There’s usually a feast of food and buckets of wine, beautifully complimented by music and dancing to the wee hours.
Making wine while the sun shines
Back in the day, wine was made at Le Moulin. When we bought the property, we inherited a few dusty bottles of what was once good Malbec, but they are probably now best kept for decorative rather than drinking purposes. Sadly, the vines had been neglected since the last harvest in 2007. However, Marc and I are determined to bring the vineyard back to its former glory and re-introduce some fine Malbec wine for which this region is famous. Our priority is to use organic methods of viticulture that are in harmony with the environment. We’ve a lot of learning to do but all in good time. We’ve become so interested in making wine that we planted even more vines. Any friend or family guests who stayed with us during springtime were lured into the vineyard by Marc to help dig, plant, weed and water. A ‘ten-minute’ job often turned out to be a few hours of ‘slave labour’! But more often than not, that was the best part of their holiday – making memories and the promise of a couple of bottles of wine after the first harvest!
Farming the land
The big field in front of Le Moulin now has a spiral vineyard and rows of olive trees with dedicated spaces for wild flowers. We’re collaborating with a local farmer to make honey, having found a big hive of bees in the attic last year. The next step will be to grow fruit and vegetables for our guests. We’ve been told that the ‘terroir’ is ideal for planting truffle trees. That could be exciting. Truffles are big business in the south west of France. I’m hoping to persuade Marc to let me get hens. Maybe I’ve been watching too much of the ‘Clarkson’s Farm’ series!
Building Projects
‘Le Malbec’
The ruins of the old barn where the wine used to be made has been converted into a luxury holiday rental for two. Aptly named ‘Le Malbec’, this special place can be booked individually, or as part of Le Moulin collection. Originally, our builders promised to have it ‘ready for Easter’ but they didn’t specify which Easter! It’s coming close to completion now and we’re delighted with the way it has been transformed – it’s cosy but cool, it has a modern edge but not too much so. And that view! I could daydream all day, looking out the window overlooking the vineyard and valley below.

The Miller’s Cottage
‘La Carral’
Perched up on a hill with panoramic views of the valley, ‘La Carral’ cottage will be ideal for romantic couples on a short break in winter or a week-long stay during summer. Plans include the addition of a traditional pigeon tower / pigeonnier, which is a traditional feature of buildings in the Lot region, and make space for a new bathroom and kitchen with a French stove. To add to its appeal, the cottage will feature a beautiful balcony and a terrace with private splash pool – perfect for that evening sundowner and for a refreshing dip in the heat of a summer’s day.
Future plans are also in place to create a dedicated wellness area for guests and a dedicated wine cave. We also intend to renovate another old farmhouse near Le Moulin. We’ve plenty to keep us out of mischief and there’s never a dull moment. Our motto is ‘Pleasure not Pressure’.

Love Donegal
My love for Donegal is as strong as ever and I’m looking forward to returning home with the family to celebrate Christmas and New Year. We’re truly blessed and grateful to have the opportunity to have the best of both worlds. As always, remembering what Daddy Mc Glone used to say, we follow his advice: “Carpe Diem”, meaning “Seize the Day” and enjoy every moment. We certainly intend to!
We are really looking forward to welcoming guests to Le Moulin. For availability please check our booking system. The warmest of welcomes awaits.
Hope to see you soon!
Warmest wishes,
Deirdre & Marc
